Beautiful Ullswater lake

Top 5 places to visit

Top 5 places to visit during your stay at Wall and Lakes Holiday Cottage, Brampton

So near to so many wonderful places, something for everyone, here are just a few suggestions….

1. Talkin Tarn Country Park

Personally, this is our number one spot to visit, its where we regularly go with family and friends.  From a stroll around the tarn on a beautiful summer evening as the sun sparkles on the water, seeing the young children in their play park and watching the bigger one’s rowing on the tarn and exploring in the woods.  It’s also my nanna’s favourite place due to its tranquility, level access, benches to rest upon and superb café. It really has something for everyone.  Under 2 miles from Brampton, it is just a very short drive away.  Alternatively, you can walk up to the tarn, via the dandy track, through the woods, across the old railway bridge, along a country lane and through fields.  Details of this and many other beautiful local walks, such as Gelt Woods, are provided in the cottage and can be picked up from Brampton tourist office, in the marketplace.

2. Lanercost Priory and Hadrian’s wall

Just a few miles away and magnificent. Why not visit amazing Lanercost Priory, enjoy a coffee in their cafe and join The Birdoswald Roman Wall trail, a great day out.

3. Tindale Tarn, RSPB bird reserve and Castle Carrock fells

Just over 3 miles to the beautiful village of Hallbankgate.  A great place to stop off and enjoy either a great bar meal at The Belted Will pub or coffee and cake in the community run 'Hallbankgate Hub/shop’.  Then walk up to Tindale Tarn and the fascinating Geltsdale RSPB bird reserve before striding out towards the village of Tindale, past the Lime Kilns or venturing across to the stunning Castle Carrock fells.  Definitely worth a visit.

4. Hadrians Wall & Birdoswald Roman Fort

Brampton, your gateway to historical Hadrian's Wall and its magnificent scenery, with Birdoswald Roman Fort within easy reach.  Of course, an absolute must to visit and so nearby, easy to reach by car or walking from Lanercost Priory.  There are many other forts and museums within easy reach as well.  Wall and Lakes cottage is a fantastic base for those who are walking the Carlisle/Brampton section of the wall or for those you just want to explore sections, visiting the forts and museums.

5. Aira Force, Matterdale, Ullswater and The Lake District National Park
Less than an hour to Lake Ullswater, the Steamers at Glenridding (a not to be missed day out) and the edge of The Lake District National Park. Here you will find fells and lakes, breath-taking areas of outstanding natural beauty and much more. You can find out about the wide range of things to see and do in the lakes by visiting TheLakeDistrict.org or any of the tourist information offices or websites.
