Best Walks from Wall and Lakes Cottage, Brampton, UK

By Alan & Shirley Jones ·

From Wall and Lakes Holiday Cottage in Brampton you are surrounded by beautiful walks and scenary, these are just 3 great walks you can do from your holiday cottage doorstep!

Fuller details on all these walks can be found inside the holiday cottage.

  1. Gelt Woods:  A pleasant walk from Brampton leads into the wooded valley of Gelt Woods, where paths follow the River Gelt beneath sandstone cliffs and through ancient woodland, passing the remains of a Roman quarry. Turn left out of Tree Gardens, along Tree Road, straight across at the road end up Paving Brow, onto Capon Tree Road and turn left when you see the signpost for Gelt Woods (and Hadrian's cycleway).
  2. Lanercost Priory:  A gentle walk from Brampton heads northeast across open farmland and quiet lanes to Lanercost Priory, a striking Augustinian monastery set beside the River Irthing, with fine red sandstone ruins and a peaceful rural setting. Overall a more moderate walk (with, for the more adventurous, an option to walk up to Birdoswald Roman Fort): Turning right out of Tree Gardens, onto Tree Road, head down to the road end with the Sands garage in front of you.  Cross over the road and walk to the left of the garage onto the Lanercost Road.  Watch out for the footpath sign near to Ridgefoot, which will take you through fields and woodland to Lanercost Priory and Tearoom.  You can walk via the road although there are no pavements and the road is narrow at points. Arrive at Magnificent Lanercost Priory and stop for refreshments/toilet at their cafe.  From here you can also opt to join the footpath up to Birdoswald Roman Fort making a great full day out.
  3. Talkin Tarn Country Park: From Brampton, the route follows the line of the old Dandy railway line north through open countryside to Talkin Tarn, a tranquil glacial lake set within a wooded park, with easy paths around its shoreline. A very rewarding moderate walk.  From Tree Gardens, turn right onto Tree Road and walk down to the road end, opposite The Sands garage.  Turn right up Station Road, then before S & S Railhead Garage you will see a footpath sign for The Dandy.  Step up from the road onto the footpath that will wind through woodland up to Brampton Railway Station.  From here you can catch trains to either Carlisle or Newcastle, stopping off at market towns, such as Hexham and Haltwhistle on the way, definately a great day out.  To continue up to Talkin Tarn walk over the old iron footbridge and follow the signs for Gelt Woods and Talkin Tarn.  From here you can choose to take a longer walk through beautiful Gelt Woods or a shorter route up to Talkin Tarn.

These are just a few of the amazing local walks, others include:  The Mote in Brampton, (right onto Tree Road, left walk along The Sands green and cross the road to the Mote footpath) a steep climb, through woodland, although definately worthwhile for the amazing views.  On a clear day you can see the monument on 'The Mote' from the garden at Wall and Lakes Cottage!  Then of course there is "The Brampton Town Trail" which takes you from The Moot Hall past iron stocks, St Martins Church, Prince Charlie's House and the Statue of George Howard.

So many more wonderful walks as well from nearby villages such as Gilsland, Castle Carrock, Hallbankgate and RSPB Geltsdale, Bewcastle, Talkin Fell ..... the list goes on and on, so many beautiful and exciting walks from easy strolls to adventurous.

And thats all without even mentioning Hadrian's Wall, The Pennine Way, Dumfries and Galloway Coast and The Lake District National Park!!

What are you waiting for dust off those walking boots and get packing.  We look forward to welcoming you soon!
