Cumbria and Northumbria Accessible Outdoors

Beautiful Accessible Outdoors: Talkin Tarn Country Park, Cumbria and Hadrian’s Wall: Walltown Country Park, Northumbria are proud to be accessible to all.

We enjoyed a fantastic day out at Hadrian’s Wall, Walltown Country Park, (CA8 7JD) a short drive from Brampton at Greenhead.  This is an amazing country park with café, accessible toilets, cycle repair stop, picnic benches, tarn, stunning countryside and historical stories of Hadrian’s Wall.  The adventurous can walk the steep path up to a section of Hadrian’s Wall where they will also be rewarded by some of the most amazing views on The Wall.  For those less adventurous or with mobility difficulties this is also a great park to visit.  Many of the footpaths have been made smooth and safe to use, accessible for wheelchair and push chair users.  Indeed, Walltown Country Park is also in the process of joining the outdoor mobility scheme and their shiny new ‘tramper’ (mobility scooter) is already on site.  I’ve seen it and had a fun test drive!  We understand visitors will shortly be able to hire out the mobility scooter (early summer 2025), keep an eye on outdoormobility.org and the Northumberland National Park websites,  Walltown Country Park • Northumberland National Park for more details.

Talkin Tarn (CA8 1HN) is even closer to your holiday cottage and is a stunningly beautiful tarn surrounded by woodlands.  You can choose to walk to Talkin Tarn from Wall and Lakes holiday cottage or a short drive by car.  Here there is something for everyone with a mainly flat 1.5 mile walk around The Tarn.  Talkin Tarn is already a proud member of the outdoor mobility scheme and for a small fee you can book and hire a ‘tramper’, mobility scooter.  Check out their website at outdoormobility.org, Talkin Tarn Country Park Tramper Hire | Outdoor Mobility.  The scooter will be waiting for you on arrival and is very easy to use.  A not to be missed experience for anyone with mobility difficulties.   You will be rewarded with amazing views over the tarn, wildlife and countryside delights.  Find out more about Talkin Tarn at:  www.carlisle.gov.uk/talkintarn
